UVAL provides guidance and promotes a range of activities of the Department of Development Policies (DPS) aimed at expanding the production of regional indicators and statistics and leveraging existing sources. Some of these initiatives originate directly from the need to develop regional databases to support evaluation in areas where UVAL is highly involved. However, most of the products generated by these activities can easily be accessed by the public, often in electronic format through the Internet. Data availability is, in fact, a critical element of meeting the information needs of all evaluation processes. An essential part of good support for planning territorial policies is the ability to examine a broad spectrum of indicators and statistics with a detailed regional breakdown.
Many of the statistics compiled with the help of UVAL coordination and/or participation are part of the National Statistical System (SISTAN). In particular the Unit is directly responsible for the production of data on overall revenues and expenditure on current and capital account for the public sector in the individual regions through the Regional Public Accounts project.
UVAL is closely involved in the preparation of operational recommendations for the co-financing of new data production within the framework of official statistics programmes and in guiding working groups for the definition of regional indicators for benchmarking purposes, in promoting and supporting the definition, the quantification and the periodic monitoring of different NSFR programme indicators (in Italian), as well as actively participating in the Technical Scientific Committee, which performs general orientation and guidance functions for activities under the agreements between the DPS and Istat.
